The Building
St George’s is a “Waterloo” church – built after the battle and consecrated in 1824. It was rebuilt after being gutted by fire in 1922. Overlooking the town centre, the church tower can be seen for miles around.Whilst it may appear imposing from the outside, St George’s has a light and airy feel, and you will always receive a warm and friendly welcome.
To find out more about the history of the church, take a look at “St George’s – a Waterloo Church” by Melvyn Thompson.
The Annexe
Many different groups meet throughout the week in the annex which can be hired for special occasions and has a kitchen and meeting room.
The Churchyard
Maintained by volunteers, St George’s is one of only two churchyards in the town open for new burials. A walk around the churchyard reveals that some of the masters who set up carpet factories in the area are buried here, including members of the Whittall, Humphries and Hoonan families.
When the Annexe was built in 1982, any remains discovered in the old unmarked graves beneath were reburied elsewhere in the churchyard.
Please help us to keep the churchyard clean and tidy, for the benefit of all. We are grateful if you can tend graves of relatives.
Flowers may be planted, or left at the grave if removed when dead.
Please note:-
- Monuments on graves or cremated remains can only be installed with permission from the Rector. He is only allowed to give permission for monuments which fall within the rules of the Diocese of Worcester.
- Kerbs and chippings are not permitted, and if installed may be removed.
- Plastic flowers, lanterns, statues etc are not considered in keeping with the churchyard, are not permitted, and may be removed.
- Out of respect for those who have loved ones buried in the churcyard, please do not use it as a dog walking area. If your dog fouls, please remove the mess.
